Who the hell is Spawn?
Spawn is a fictional antihero appearing in a monthly comic book of the same name published by American company Image Comics, as well as in a number of films, television series, and video game adaptations set in the Image Universe. Created by Todd McFarlane, the character first appeared in Spawn #1 (May 1992).
In short the story goes, Spawn was once human, while in combat he was killed, made a deal with the devil to see his wife and now works for the devil. I missed a few things there so go check it out.
there’s a dodgy 90s movie if your that way inclined but the comics are better.
So for this project took an old McFarlane figure I got all the years ago and set into a beat up frame I had spawn was beat up old and most of the paint had come off. I think a foot was missing too.
I wanted to create a full working scene within the frame so I had the bright idea to have a of skulls behind him like he was in hell. I also wanted to have him stood on hellish sand/dust a bit like a Mars scape
What I didn’t realise was having a wall of skulls would actually mean sculpting a ton of skulls and building a physical wall, there was loads! In fact about half way through I almost gave up thinking it wasn’t going to work.
I pushed on and decided to include an old chain that we had left over from a bunch of old hanging baskets.
finally I finished up with a full re-paint, here the finished thing…
So I guess this is a whistle stop view of the background and process, I’m always a bit unsure of how much to share on the behind the scenes stuff to some it’s interesting but to others it may come off as boring.
let me know in the comments if you want to know more and I’ll take more photos and document it all better.
until next time…
Steve
